    MWA - Begin Your Journey

When is the right time to move on?

Knowing when and how to move onto a new position can be challenging. By nature, we seek comfort and safety. Too much of a risk and we are averse to change. But too little challenge and we become stagnant.

So, how do we decide when is the right time to move on?

In the IP industry, opportunities come and go rapidly. Change can occur infrequently, and the best opportunities are highly sought after by excellently qualified professionals. So, understanding when and why you should consider a move is a positive step in preparing for a successful career.

    Thinking of Making a Change?

We will come back to you and arrange a time to discuss your hiring needs, and how MWA can support you.

Considering this, it is likely time to pause and reflect when you:

Hit a plateau. Throughout our career, we experience inclines in which knowledge and experience accumulate and we grow professionally. After a period of time (which is highly dependent upon the situation), we begin to plateau as opportunities to grow and learn are diminished. You may feel a lack of a spark in the work you do or an absence of growth opportunities. Perhaps the role becomes mundane. If you are approaching this plateau, then it is time to reassess your priorities and understand whether your professional needs are fulfilled and avoid future stagnation.

Have zero work-life balance. Despite the obvious lack of fulfillment, likely negative health consequences and social impact, this will also limit your opportunity to grow and develop professionally. Thus, impacting your future capabilities and likelihood of achieving your professional targets. As busy professionals, it is easy to continue through life without considering the topic of our future, but if you cannot even fathom that there could be opportunities elsewhere – because you are drowning beneath unrealistic expectations and an unhealthy workload – then this is a sign to stop and take a breather. Consider your values in life and how in-line with these you are. If you are veering too far from your internal path, then it is time to advocate for yourself and explore a healthier option.

No longer align with the organizational values. To work for an organization is to contribute to pushing an agenda forward. When your ideology and your employer’s do not align, it can be grating. It’s crucial to know what matters to you in the workplace. It is far more fulfilling to work in a job that aligns with your values. When making career decisions, considering who you are and the values you hold dear is just as important as salary or title. If you find yourself in a situation where your company’s values don’t align with yours, it may be time to consider leaving.

Are in an unhealthy workplace. Rather more obviously, if you are surviving within a negative workplace, then it is likely time to explore other options. This could be due to a toxic culture, drastic organizational changes, bad management or other reasons. A flower cannot flourish without the right conditions to nurture its growth. Professional development is very much the same.

A simple step is to take the time to pause and reflect. Where are you now in your career? Where do you want to be? How will you get there? Who is supporting you?

If you would like support in exploring your options and having a non-committal career conversation, then please do reach out to one of our experienced team today. We would be happy to help.
