MWA support annual Candlelighters Ball at Rudding House
On Saturday 12th May the annual Ball was held at Rudding Park in aid of the Yorkshire based children’s cancer charity, Candlelighters. The Ball which is organised by the Ilkley branch of the fundraising group and raised over £ 40,000.
The evening began with a champagne reception followed by talks given by two inspirational speakers. The first was a mother whose daughter had been diagnosed with Leukemia aged 12. Through the dedicated work of the NHS and the support given to the family by Candlelighters her story had a happy ending and her daughter is now 21 and studying maths at University. Not every child has this opportunity as Dr. Beki James, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist at LGI informed us. Her talk was very moving and explained that although they are now achieving a success rate of 80% there are still 20% of children who sadly lose their lives. We were all very moved by the speakers which reiterated why we have chosen to support this wonderful charity.
We had a fabulous night bidding on both the live and silent auction and entering raffles for donated jewellery from Harrogate based jewellers and generous gifts donated by attendees. There was dancing, a casino and games and an enjoyable evening was had whilst at the same time as raising much needed funds.
