Build your career with a leading international practice

The Opportunity

You join a highly successful international firm which is a true equity partnership with offices in Belgium and a client base to be revered within the profession. NLO has marked itself out form the market, employing strong business-acumen attorneys who understand the commercial need of their clients.

You will join the Belgian office where you will play a pivotal role in helping to grow and develop the team in Mechelen. In parallel to this, you will work on high profile cases within the pharmaceutical and chemistry fields as well as playing a key part in NLO’s Belgian Management Team in its ongoing expansion and brand development within the national market.

NLO set out to internationalise their firm in 2015, opening a Belgian office. The firm had high hopes and ambitious objectives, placed upon the shoulders of the partners responsible for taking this step. They have not disappointed. Over the last five years, the firm has rooted itself in the Ghent region and more recently Mechelen, with great success. You will be part of this journey, which is far from complete. You will get to influence the growth of the practice and in doing so, will set your own career path towards partnership.

The Role

  • To work with the leading partner on some of the highest profile clients in the firm.
  • To mentor and coach a trainee attorney and support the hire and coaching of additional trainees.
  • To be part of the Belgian Management Team in the ongoing developments of the office and national branding.
  • To run a campaign of business acquisition locally as well as supporting international client development.

Professional Qualities

What is expected in the position is someone who is experienced in pharmaceutical chemistry or related technologies. Equally, having the requisite years of experience to take on such client work, have the competency to advise clients at this level and also the maturity and confidence to manage trainees is crucial to the role. However, we are not concerned how many years you have accrued; we are more interested in what you have done with those years of experience. NLO is a great place to work but they do not accept anyone to join them. Their level of expectation reflects the premium client base they serve and the variety of case complexity they manage.

In talking to the partner about what is non-negotiable in the individual joining the firm, it is the attitude and personality. Someone needs to be open, engaging and able to adapt to the changing needs of the firm and clients. The Belgian office is now established and deeply rooted. However, there is always a need to ‘roll up the sleeves’ and get involved in activities in and around the firm in order to maintain the high pace and success of the practice.
