The Opportunity

The Chemistry Section of NLO sets itself apart from many of its Dutch competitors, providing its attorneys with a highly revered direct client base including Danone, Unilever, Friesland Campina, and Heineken to name but a few. With big corporates, you would be forgiven for assuming that they receive instruction at arms-length. This certainly is not the case. The attorneys are in the privileged position to sit down with the inventors, heads of research, in-house attorneys, and commercial leaders, to initiate a proactive patent strategy which is in line with the clients’ aims and objectives. NLO cares deeply about fostering these relationships, and they prefer to augment this through seconding their attorneys to the client’s site to get under the skin in understanding what impact IP has in the wider context of the client’s commercial direction.

To support this ongoing growth NLO is now looking to cement its ‘mid-layer’ attorney resource through the appointment of a nearly/newly qualified attorney to the Chemistry Section.  With the exciting direct case-work, including many oppositions, the limit to your growth is set by your level of ambition – NLO is in the top 20 European IP firms active in opposition proceedings before the EPO. The opportunity is there for you to grow and develop into a highly valued, senior attorney – you just have to have the capabilities, character and ambition to grab it!

The Role

The role exists to ensure that NLO helps its clients in building their IP position – be that from scratch or through ongoing growth and support. This is achieved by providing strategic patent support, which is proactive, commercially attuned and responsive to the demands of the client.

You will join a team of experienced patent attorneys who have come from differing backgrounds: industry or previous IP firms but who share the same vision of what IP should mean to a company. You will be a strong personality who can impart knowledge and experience across the team when required but who can also show consistent high work output. Your career trajectory will be to eventual Associate Partner and you will be given the ‘tools’ to help you get there.

Professional Qualities

  • You will come to this position with an academic background in chemistry, chemical technology, food technology, pharmacy or related degree. Due to the variety of clients and the breadth of technologies, the position can be ‘dressed’ to suit you;
  • You will have at least three years of experience working in the profession;
  • If you have experience of post-grant matters, then this would be useful although not critical to the post;
  • Demonstrable business acumen and knowledge with the ability to quickly understand key IP issues relating to a business.
  • Proven ability to work in teams, motivate and inspire others towards a common goal.
  • Strong Emotional Intelligence in order to understand the heart of a client’s requirements, which may not be extrinsically communicated.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills with the ability to engage with legal, commercial, sales and marketing teams within the firm.
