Manager IP

The Opportunity

You will join a world-leading semiconductor multinational, which is highly respected for its research, innovation and commercial achievements. They have not only contributed to the remarkable advance of the semiconductor industry, they have shaped the industry itself through a series of breakthrough innovations in technologies such as plasma deposition and epitaxy and, since 2000, through Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD).

ASM is looking to you to join their international R&D site located in Leuven, Belgium, where you will be expected to build awareness of IP across the team, as well as manage the full life cycle of patent matters, with an increasing focus towards commercializing the IP with the many partners located at the same high-tech innovation hub. This role also expects you to take a commercial view of the business, communicating patent strategy across multiple stakeholders but to also take ownership for managing the portfolio, and ensuring maximum protection of ASM’s IP rights and assets.

The Role

We are not looking for a purely desk-based “prep and pros” attorney, but for someone who will be a true student of the business, understanding the business, technology groups and challenges facing the company. You will use your IP knowledge coupled with a commercial outlook to generate significant value from the company’s innovation.  You will be located at the R&D site located in Leuven, Belgium – the test centre for process integration – alongside your clients, thus maximising the efficiency of communication and fostering a strong sense of collaboration. Bear in mind though that this is a global role with responsibility for patent activities being generated from the global research platform employed by ASM.

Professional Qualities

  • Your academic education in chemistry, materials science, physics or related degree will provide you with a broad base of technical knowledge.
  • You will have a strong foundation in drafting and prosecution activities which can then be tailored to the differing needs of the research groups and cases under your charge.
  • Your experience of working with IP in a commercial context – managing agreements and negotiating on deals will also be useful to the role.
  • You may have come from industry or private practice; both environments are equally useful to the post. What determines who will be suitable will relate to the ‘added value’ in terms of communication, team-work, and business acumen.
  • You will have worked in cross-functional teams where you understand the importance of communicating IP to a range of internal stakeholders. Equally, if your background is private practice, you will have advised a broad range of functions, each requiring different levels of IP detail in order to facilitate commercial decisions.
